Mantic Tribe
How to get started in Firefight/Deadzone
Ya’ll know I’m a sucker for 3d printing. The (relative) ease of use, the low cost of the models, and the sheer joy of being able to get some models on the table in a few hours makes it my primary hobby. If you have read anything from me, you already know all of this to be true. I should stop printing, and do more playing, but I enjoy painting more and collecting more than anything. I don’t always carve out a few hours to play, when I probably should, but the hobby is what the hobby is.
So I was pleasantly surprised when Mantic sent me a free trial to their new tribe. I was hoping to write this earlier in the month, but my old Elegoo bit the dust, and I had to wait a few weeks to get the whole protection thing resolved. It was painless and easy. Just took a few days to do everything that I needed to do.
So of course when I got my new Elegoo (read about it below), I knew what was going to be my project for the month.
This is only the first month, but they have already talked about next month. It appears this tribe will be focused (at least for now) on Mantic’s Firefight game. The models can also be used for their Deadzone game.
May’s release and the starter set are all about their Orc models and their Enforcer models. I have not dug into the lore that much, so I don’t know much about the models. They are really good models.
I printed some Enforcers, though I need to print the weapons for them, and a couple of units of Marauders. As you would expect from a big name company, these models printed exceptionally well. They are not too detailed, and they should paint up nicely (if I ever get the motivation to finish these stupid samurai on my table, turns out I don’t like painting samurai, or maybe I just don’t like my color scheme).
These are not one piece models, they have a variety of weapon options, so you will need to glue them together (I always prefer one piece models, but that is my own hangup). The weapons on the maurauders are interchangeble between the various models. I was able to take the missle launcher from the commandos, and use them on the skyscrapers (flying orcs with jet packs)l.
Firefight does use custom dice, but they are a part of the welcome pack. I printed 18 of them, and they roll well, and they appear to be fairly balanced. I am currently rolling them, and recording the results for an indepth analysis of the fairness of them.
I haven’t gotten a chance to get the game on the table, but when has that ever stopped from printing before. The models of course can work for a variety of games, and the interoperability of the various weapons will allow me to create any Stargrave crew that I care to play with.
The June pack looks interesting. More Orcs, more enforcers, and a transport.
If you have any interest in Firefight, this seems like a great way to start building up a couple of armies. Print a few units every month, and start your own slow grow league. I am excited to see where they go from here.
I already own some of these models from their other subscription service, the Mantic Vault, but I did get some new stuff.
Also, shameless plug, I want to get to the 1,000 subscribe mark, so I can Ripper Mech
Looks great.
